Grid-Ireland CA closure and migration

In the Grid-Ireland email notice of closure of 27 July 2012, Grid-Ireland CA certificate users were reassured that the OpsCentre would explore a number of options to ensure continuity of this service. Fortunately HEAnet have generously offered to provide both e-Science Server and e-Science Personal Certificates through the IGTF-accredited Terena Certificate Service. This will allow the Grid-Ireland CA to close at the end of 2012 along with the rest of the Grid-Ireland Operations Centre at TCD.

Grid-Ireland decommissioning is under way

There is a need to decommission gracefully to allow time for the existing Irish grid community to migrate to alternatives, to carefully wind down Irish grid support for international VOs, and to decommission the Irish grid resource centres (which are remotely managed by the operations centre).

Grid-Ireland Operations Centre Closure on 31 December 2012

As a result of a government funding decision in mid-2011 concerning the Grid-Ireland Operations Centre at TCD, strenuously appealed, the Operations Centre's host department has suffered large financial losses, and has now decided that these cannot be sustained beyond the end of 2012.

We would like to thank all of our users, site administrators, supporters and staff for contributing to Grid-Ireland's successes over the years.

Trinity Researchers Launch New Smartphone Application for Viewing Images of the Sun

Researchers from Trinity’s School of Physics and School of Computer Science and Statistics celebrated the launch of a new Smartphone version of SolarMonitor.org, that allows you to view the most recent NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) images of the Sun from your Smartphone. The group, led by Trinity solar physicist, Dr Peter Gallagher, launched the application at the annual European Space Weather Week conference in Belgium recently.

TCD Researchers Bridge Gap between Cloud Computing and Grid Technologies

Trinity College researchers based at the School of Computer Science and Statistics who are involved in a collaborative project called StratusLab have produced new software to bridge the gap between grid and cloud computing infrastructures. Working in collaboration with five European partners, the TCD team, led by Research Fellow Dr David O'Callaghan, have been responsible for developing the StratusLab Marketplace, a registry of virtual machine or disk images which can be deployed on a StratusLab cloud.

To enable critical software and firmware updates to be applied to storage appliances in the Grid-Ireland operations centre at Trinity College, downtime has been scheduled for Tuesday 27th April 2010 from 9am onwards. We will also utilise this outage to apply routine patches to other systems. Grid-Ireland services, including the National Services and the TCD grid cluster, will be unavailable during this period. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Grid Downtime for TCD network testing

In order to test the functionality of recently implemented network architecture, a period of network downtime during which College will have no internet connection is scheduled from 8am to 9am on Thursday, 23rd July 2009. The following hour, from 9am to 10am, should be considered as an 'at risk' period during which we will specifically monitor the network for any instability in service and take any necessary action to restore this service.

TCD Computers Come Together to Fight Avian Flu

During April, computers in Ireland have been working overtime in the fight against avian flu. As part of an international collaboration, computers at Trinity College Dublin have put in 6.7 thousand hours of time searching for possible drug components against the avian flu virus H5N1. The analysis used a computing Grid, a new network that brings together worldwide computer resources to solve scientific problems.

SoloVO resources now available at TCD
